About

ART

Devotion is a Williamsburg gallery focused on the intersection of art, science, new media, and design. We present cross-disciplinary work that draws from architecture, computation, gaming, biology, fabrication, interface design, open-source communities, cloud computing, sound, and complexity. We are always seeking out artists who use new technologies or introduce new paradigms.

Devotion's Board consists of Brian Jackson (philosopher, educator, and electronic musician), Margaret Schedel (Ph.D. and Professor of Sound Art at SUNY), and David Last (musician and artist). Phillip Stearns (circuit bender, hacker, gardener, and new media artist) and Marie Evelyn (artist, curator, computational biologist, and former Devotion Gallery CoDirector) serve as Advisors to the Board. Phoenix Perry (artist, musician, and designer) is the Gallery Director and Primary Shareholder.

We collaborate with the distinct purpose of giving the New York arts community a venue that radically re-envisions how art and technology negotiate relationships within our culture. Together, we are fostering a community that generates dialogue between art, technology, and scientific research.

EDUCATION

In addition to presenting an interdisciplinary curatorial vision, Devotion houses a comprehensive arts education program and serves as an Ableton Certified Training Facility. We know from experience that tools and skills are integral to expression. We take pride in our deep knowledge of the technology used in our creations. Each instructor comes to Devotion with years of teaching experience, and class sizes are very small, so expect a high quality learning experience.

Devotion's educational programming emphasizes the integration of technology, community, and creativity: All of our classes are designed with these facets in mind. Under the direction of Brian Jackson (one of the very first Ableton Certified Trainers), Devotion offers numerous Ableton Live courses and workshops for users of all levels -- from novice to working professional. For those interested in Max/MSP/Jitter and Max For Live, Devotion offers two former Cycling ‘74 employees as instructors. We also specialize in Logic, Pro Tools, music production, sound design, synthesis, visual design, creative software development, circuit bending, creative process, and audio engineering. Our space is equipped with high quality professional reference monitors, and each workstation is kept up-to-date with the latest software and hardware.

OUTREACH

We're devoted to enabling local non-profit arts organizations to carry out their mission. Every odd year, Devotion Gallery appoints a Resident Not-for-Profit, who is provided with a four-week time slot within each annual curatorial calendar. A selected Resident Not-for-Profit organization has a mission that aligns with Devotion's curatorial vision, presents emerging artists and experimental art forms, and has one or more artist-development initiatives. Complexity-driven arts organization Analogous Projects is the Resident Not-for-Profit for the 2009-2011 cycle. For more information about the Resident Not-for-Profit program, please send your letter of inquiry to Phoenix@AreYouDevoted.com.

We have plans to initiate an in-gallery educational outreach program within the next two years. The mission of this program will be to provide young girls (i.e., aged 12-17) with the technical skills required to create and present new media works. In order to realize this program, we will be seeking volunteer instructors, additional funding, and administrative assistance. For more information about this initiative, email Phoenix@AreYouDevoted.com.
